There are certainly tickets still available. Of course, it all depends on the popularity of the event you’d like to attend.
I lived in Los Angeles during the 1984 Summer Olympics. We were all told that "it will be an absolute zoo - if possible, take a vacation and go out of town during the Games". I wasn’t planning to attend any events. Wisely, I decided that I was lucky that the Olympics were coming to my hometown (not many people can say that).
About one week before the Games, I was able to get tickets to a quarterfinal soccer game (it turned out to be France vs. Egypt - France went on to win the gold medal) and a basketball game between China and Uruguay. I also saw the men’s marathon (a free event).
